Biofeedback is a technique by which patients can influence their body’s functioning. Patients can monitor the functions they wish to control, such as heartbeat or skin temperature, so that they can manipulate them by conscious mental control. We have all read accounts of incredible feats of physical control performed by Indian yogis : walking on burning coals without being burned or blistered, being buried in the ground for days and emerging alive, sticking needles into the flesh without bleeding. A plausible explanation for such feats is that they represent a variation of biofeedback training. In a common form of biofeedback training, people learn to increase blood flow to their hands by relaxing the nerves that regulate it. They pay attention to the skin temperature of their fingers, which is converted to an audio or visual display in order to provide continous feedback. This is accomplished by means of a biofeedback machine that monitors physiological functions. Biofeedback is safe and it does not make patients dependent on outside help. In fact, it shows them how to manage their own bodies in new ways and so increases medical self-reliance. Aside from their therapeutic applications, biofeedback force the conclusion that mind can influence body in far more ways than medical scientists have thought.
