Wine Can Make The Perfect Present

A few tips on picking the ideal wine gift for family, friends or colleagues …

There is something particularly rewarding about being presented with a special bottle of wine. And because it can be a very personal thing, choosing the right wine to give to a friend or loved one, will show them just how much you care.

But with so many choices out there, the task of picking the right wine as a present can prove a bit daunting. But there are a few simple tips, which should help you steer clear of any pitfalls. First of all think about the person you are buying for. That may sound simple, but just because you like sherry, don’t assume everyone else will. If in doubt – it’s often best to stick with tried and tested favourites.

If you’re buying something for a man, whether it’s a work colleague, your father, or husband – there’s always something particularly grand about a bottle of Port or whisky. Both are excellent options especially around Christmas time and, as they are not an everyday item, they have an added ‘treat’ factor. Classic wines such as reds from Bordeaux or crisp, dry white from Chablis are good safe bets. The 2005 vintage was one of the finest in Bordeaux for a long time, which improved the standard of all the wines from that year. So if you spot any – they’re worth snapping up.

If you are buying something for a woman then Champagne is almost guaranteed to raise a smile. And if authentic Champagne is looking a tad expensive, there are plenty of top-quality sparkling whites to get that are great value. If you’re looking for something a bit different then Sparkling rosés are becoming increasingly popular. As well as a refreshing vibrant taste there is something deliciously elegant and romantic about a flute of bubbly rosé. If the lady in question prefers red wine – a Pinot Noir from New Zealand or, if you’re feeling flush, red Burgundy has a unique celebrated red-berry complexity that sets it apart from all other reds.

These are a just few suggestions, but it is worth visiting the website of a reputable wine merchant to find out more. Many will offer sound advice on what to get as well as delivery direct to your home or whichever address you choose. Decanter Magazine’s Wine Merchant of the Year – Laithwaites is a good place to start laithwaites (dot)co(dot)uk. The have an extensive range with interesting mixed cases for simple ‘thank you’ wine gifts as well as fine wine for when you want something truly impressive.

With expert advice at your fingertips making the right choice becomes a lot easier as does making that special someone feel particularly appreciated. Happy hunting!

Don’t Let the Office Trip You Up: Avoiding Workplace Injury

September 4th, 2008 by asingleton

Most people in the UK have a place of work; whether it’s an office, factory, shop, school, hospital or even their own home. The employment rate at the beginning of 2008 was a healthy 74.8 percent. Total hours worked reached 942.0 million, meaning more hours are spent at work every day than anywhere else.

As so many people spend so much time at work, there is a constant risk of injury. In fact, 28,267 major injuries to employees were reported in 2006/07, as well as 113,083 ‘less-serious’ injuries that ensured workers were absent for over 3 days. Added to the number of injuries and illnesses sustained outside the workplace, these figures highlight the huge amount of money lost by businesses every day due to staff absences.

In the wake of taxpayers discovering that their money may be at risk following the government’s £24bn rescue of Northern Rock, people up and down the country were shocked and worried to learn about the apparent loss of sensitive data on over 25 million people after two computer discs containing records of all British families with children under sixteen - that’s over seven million families - had been lost in the post!

These records included details such as parents’ and children’s names, dates of birth, addresses, National Insurance numbers and, in some cases, even banks and building society account details – just about everything a potential fraudster would need to steal from innocent people.

Auctions are good venues to find odd unusual items.

September 3rd, 2008 by nitin.nitnew

Surely you know what it is like to be desperately looking for something that seems to be maidenly out of reach. Everyone has gone through something similar at some point be it a car, a particular article of clothing, a specific piece of furniture or just a boyfriend or even a husband. Thanks to the internet, these things just might be a bit easier to find, provided you pay the price.

Auctions have always been good venues to find odd uncommon objects. Things that have been discarded as well as things which the owner just wants to sell for whatever reason. Online auctions have the same characteristic. You might even be able to find odder, more uncommon objects here than in a live auction given as online auction websites might not be so particular or strict about the objects they bid off.

Dolls Houses: Child’s Play or Just for the Adults?

September 2nd, 2008 by asingleton
Category: Others, Family | Comments Off

To most people dolls houses are designed for the amusement of children or collectors, and serve no real purpose other than to keep one occupied; or, in the case of children, out of mischief. However, just a little research into the history of the dolls house reveals a far more interesting background than one might imagine.

Spanning across thousands of years, the humble dolls house has changed significantly in not only appearance, but also function. The earliest known examples of what we would now call dolls houses were miniature homes, discovered in Egyptian Tombs and thought to be created over 5,000 years ago. Built out of wood, it is believed the models, which included servants, furnishings and livestock, served religious purposes.
