The Tower of London: A Glance into History

March 31st, 2008 by asingleton

The Tower of London was founded in 1078 when the Norman king William the Conqueror ordered the White Tower - a stark, square fortress - to be built. This was as much to protect the Normans from the people of the City of London as it was to protect London from outside invaders. The Tower was built using Caen stone, imported from France.

In the 12th century, King Richard the Lionheart enclosed the Tower with a curtain wall and had a moat dug around it and filled with water from the Thames. The moat was not successful, however, until Henry III strengthened the curtain wall and, later, Edward I built an outer curtain wall which created a concentric double defence. The Tower of London remained a Royal residence until political and military leader Oliver Cromwell demolished the old palatial buildings in the 17th century.

Ravens have also been synonymous with the Tower Of London for centuries. It is thought that at least six ravens have been in residence at the Tower since the 12th and 13th centuries. Legend has it that Charles II ordered their removal following complaints from Royal Astronomer John Flamsteed. They were not removed however due to Charles II being informed of the legend that if the ravens ever leave the Tower, the monarchy and the entire Kingdom would fall. Superstition or not, following the English Civil War, Charles was unwilling to take the risk and the ravens stayed right up to the present day.

Perhaps the most famous use for the Tower of London over the centuries, besides being the home of the Crown Jewels since the 14th century, was as a prison for those of high rank and religious dissidents. The first ever prisoner held in the Tower was Ranulf Flambard, the Bishop of Durham, who was found guilty of extortion in 1100. Other notable prisoners include Henry VI of England, Sir Walter Raleigh and Guy Fawkes. Rudolph Hess, deputy leader of the Nazi party, was the last State prisoner to be held at the Tower in 1941. The Tower also contained various torture chambers, with many public executions also taking place in the Tower’s grounds including those of several of Henry the Eighth’s wives.

In the present day, the Tower of London is one of the world’s premier tourist destinations with many international tourists filling nearby hotels in London and visiting the Tower each year. Not only offering a glimpse of the Crown Jewels, the Tower of London also offers visitors a glimpse into the exciting, and oftentimes macabre, history of England and Britain.

Buy a used engine, not a new car!

March 31st, 2008 by Ronnie Tanner

Today, people everyday are purchasing either a new or used car to replace an older one that may have had previous problems with the engine. Buying a used engine is a great alternative to getting into a new car note but it can be risky business if you don’t know what to look for. One of the things that makes it so risky is the fact that there is no legal requirement to maintain the engine to any standard, or to keep any kind of accurate log.

So the first thing to look for some kind of service record on the engine or a Car-Fax statement showing the mileage as listed by the DMV. If it’s not there, the engine might not be what you think you are getting. I see at least one engine every month that was bought used and was misrepresented as being much fresher than what it actually was. Nearly every such case, the buyer was told that the engine had just been “rebuilt”, or that it has only been “broken in.” In actuality the engine had over 100K miles and had been sitting in the rain for 2 years rusted up solid.

Funky promo items: what are best?

March 31st, 2008 by asingleton

Giving away freebies is a great way to publicise your small business, but before you place an order the challenge is to find items that are likely to give maximum impact and really promote your company. Any such items will undoubtedly be more effective if they are also relevant to your target market, but where do you start?

The first challenge is to find an item that people will use every day or on most days of the week, but isn’t too expensive to supply. Ultra-cheap, tacky items should be avoided for two reasons; first, they won’t give a very flattering impression of your company and second, they will be instantly discarded. People like to receive free stuff but that initial joy at getting something for nothing will soon evaporate if they are simply not usable, or unwanted.

Unless you want it to spend most of its days stuck in a dark drawer, also consider something a little more adventurous than a branded biro. Although top quality pens will definitely be used by recipients, they are far too expensive to give away indiscriminately and so would be far more suited to being given away as Christmas gifts to your customers.

Look for innovative novelty value or go for something particularly visually stunning to distinguish your promotional items from the many others out there. Items that have a unique or everyday function are more likely to be accepted as a useful give-away.

If you need more inspiration or are worried about ‘being seen to be green’ how about looking at promotional items made from recycled materials? In an amazing initiative in Oregon, USA, a non-profit organisation collects approximately 3,000 pounds of used bicycle parts from shops throughout 17 states every month, and then attempts to recycle as much of it as possible. Any parts that can’t be re-used are turned into usable items such as funky bike chain bottle openers, that can be used as a keyring or hanging from a belt.

Indeed, keyrings with built-in bottle openers are a pre-requisite wardrobe item for most youngsters these days, and if you are operating in a younger market you should certainly consider these as an effective marketing tool - especially if you can make them extremely funky!

Funky promotional keyrings also fall into the ‘used every day’ category and a cursory search around the internet throws up other such marvellous examples as; hard hat keyrings, PVC keyring bottle openers and house-shaped bottle opener keyrings, amongst many others.

It appears the only limitation to buying innovative or funky promotional items to publicise your company will be your budget, as there is a plethora of material available out there. Enjoy deciding which is best for your company!

There are a lot of options when it comes to organizing your home, and before you can make an informed decision, you really should look at all of them. The problem with this is that it doesn’t look very attractive, and it’s not easy to access any of your things, so while it’s probably the easiest and least expensive option; it’s usually not the best one.
